Looking Back

Sometimes I wish I could turn back the hands of time, even just for a day to relive the wonderful childhood that I had!  This time of year brings back so many wonderful memories of a time long past when the streets were safe, neighbors looked out for each other and times were simpler.

I grew up in a small Village right outside of Buffalo, NY  it had to be the closest thing to "Mayberry" there ever was. The Village of Kenmore had so much to offer it's residents. A beautiful park, that had a wading pool for the little ones in the summer and in the winter it was flooded for ice skating. There were tennis courts, baseball diamonds, volley ball courts, swings, slides, and merry go rounds. But beyond the "things" there was a neighborhood of people that looked out for one another,

Neighbors reached out in times of trouble, offered a helping hand, and a shoulder to lean on. Oh what I wouldn't give to have times like that now!

It makes me sad to see how much things have changed. Somewhere along the line, people have become self centered. It is no longer what can I do to help a friend or neighbor, but what do I get.  People no longer reach out to help someone in need, they are too busy with activities, things and the next biggest, best toy.

It's time for everyone to take a long hard look around and see how they can help make a change. Who can you reach out to and give a helping hand?  Even if it is something small like holding a door opened, a friendly hello, or a smile. Each one of us CAN make a difference!  One baby step at a time, reaching out, making this world a better place.
